PETE FOUND Lonnie McQueen smoking a cigarette near the front entrance of the Academic II Building of Florida International University’s northern branch campus—more formally known as the Biscayne Bay Campus—which housed the school’s journalism program, among others. Unlike the better known, bigger main campus in southwest Miami, the BBC always seemed grittier and more urban to Pete. The looming gray buildings and hodge-podge architecture contrasted sharply with the picturesque greenery and tropical Miami weather.

McQueen noticed Pete approaching and dropped the butt at his feet, grinding it into the pavement before kicking it toward the grass. McQueen was in his late fifties but looked to be much older than that, a thick belly pushing out from his worn white long-sleeved shirt and a gleam of sweat covering his dark skin. Pete gave the man a wave as he approached the professor.

“Pete Fernandez, I presume,” McQueen said.

“That’s me.”

“Not every day I get to talk to another Miami Times survivor,” McQueen said, his white teeth gleaming. “Though I can’t say I remember you from the newsroom.”

“I worked in sports, mostly,” Pete said. “On the desk.”

“Ah, right, that explains it. I was on the day side,” McQueen said. “You all prepped for the storm?”

Pete gave McQueen a confused look.

“They just upgraded Tropical Storm Elizabeth to a Category 2 hurricane,” he said. “Should be even bigger in a few days. Still early, but it looks like it’s coming straight for us.”

“News to me,” Pete said. The weather was the last thing on his mind.

“Alright, alright,” McQueen said. “You want to get down to business?”

“Sure.”

“Well, let’s go,” McQueen said, motioning for Pete to follow him into the building. “I doubt you came here to talk storms or to reminisce, right?”
